Some will remember Gippy, a Groenendael (black) Belgian
Shepherd who brought Jennifer to the club in 1989. Not
being involved with instructing or canteen management
at that time they reached class 4. Then along came Agility;
though nine years old then, Gippy seemed to enjoy that
discipline despite falling off the A frame on top of
Ron. Both survived with no ill effects until arthritis
said no more.
Keemah was born
in Hornsby, N.S.W. on October 3rd, 2000 with the name
Lanaker Quimah; went to live in Somerville, Vic. Where,
at 14 weeks, Lesley decided she wasn’t suitable
for showing and offered her to Jennifer who was on the
waiting list for a Tervueren (red) Belgian Shepherd.
The name Quimah
being a bit “how do you pronounce that?”
caused a change to Keemah; that was later discovered
to be an actual name. Keemah being First Counsel and
life long friend to the Tibetan General Rana Teupai
in the novel “The Land of No Return” by
John A Schettler.
A week after
Keemah arrived Jennifer hurt her back, so not much training
was done for a time. What with instructing and canteen,
Keemah is still in class two though she can do most
exercises except stay, which she refuses to do most
of the time.
Tried Flyball
– great speed over the jumps but once the ball
is grabbed, Keemah goes off to socialise. Tried Agility
– loves it but also loves to visit everyone there.
The same with Tricks. Keemah has a good nose but hasn’t
tried Tracking because Jennifer can’t walk over
rough terrain. Keemah is
a champion “meeter and greeter” and seems
to think the world is there to pat her and every dog
and cat is a potential playmate.
Belgian Shepherds
are the only breed with four distinct types recognised
by breeders and clubs worldwide. Groenendael, Tervueren,
Malinois and Laekenois.
